Brazil is the 7th most unequal country in the world. In parallel, Brazil displays rising levels of violence, homicide rates rose 24%; 35.1% when considering only 15-29 years-olds, being the first cause of death in this age band. Not surprisingly, 1 out of 3 students in Brazil manifest common mental disorders; at least 10% over England and USA’s prevalence.

The aforementioned statistics suggest the great challenges faced by the next Brazilian generation and a scenario conducive to the establishment of the Culture of Peace initiatives. This is particularly important regarding youth, as they are both the main victims and the agents with greater chance of inner and social transformation for the future.

The differential of the FO-CO project is the creation of a scientifically evaluable programme that associates the teaching of contemplative practices not only to wellbeing, but to a broader education to provide a greater connection between people, culture of peace, ethics, non-violence and compassionate living. Likewise, it will be a free and universal programme with the potential to disseminate to a continental-size country with challenges of social inequality and violence.

The proposal is directed to public schools which involves training educators to promote the social-emotional development for students and their families. The focus of the project will be the development of social-emotional skills, non-violent comunication and contemplative practices.

The project includes interviews, focus groups, meetings with specialists, teachers, students and family members, beside workshops for educators, family members and the students. The proposal will be  built based on the experience of population and on the scientific evidences available.

The FO-CO program was presented at the Mind & Life Europe - Contemplative Science Symposium - BEYOND CONFINES – INTEGRATING SCIENCE, CONSCIOUSNESS AND SOCIETY, on October 25th - 27th, 2019, in Fürstenfeldbruck, Germany.

EBOOK

This e-book is one of the initiatives of the FO-CO project (FOr COmpassionate living), whose objective is to promote a more compassionate coexistence between people, in educational and family environments.

Living with emotions is the ability to recognize, accept and express what we feel regardless of whether we like it or not. We cannot control what we feel, but we can choose what to do with our emotions.

Therefore, recognizing the emotion that is present and knowing how to use words or other language to express it is a fundamental skill for coexistence. The e-book was designed as support material for the “Conviver com as Emotions” workshops, bringing concepts about coexistence and connection, emotional regulation, the difference between facts and judgments and universal human needs. All of this helps us to live together and cultivate relationships with greater compassion and empathy between people.
